St Martin

Close to 60 lanterns lit up the night during our annual lantern procession to celebrate Saint Martin’s Day. It was the fifth year miniature pony Merlin and donkey Jack from Farmyard Parties Wellington accompanied the children and supported the re-enactment of the Story of Saint Martin.

This popular event taking place in communities all over Germany on 11 November each year, tells the story of the Roman soldier Martin who, riding his horse on a freezing cold day, saw a beggar shivering in the cold. Martin took his cloak and cut it into two, giving one half to the poor man.

The tradition of a children‘s procession of lanterns led by a man on horseback re-enacting Saint Martin, is in honour of the soldier turned saint and his great act of charity.
